Keychron V6 Max QMK/VIA Wireless Custom Mechanical Keyboard

I like the V series keyboards, and I'm glad to see the V Max series now has a gasket-mount option. I'm reducing by two stars, however, as there were a couple QC issues that could be problematic for an inexperienced keyboard modder or someone who's looking for an off-the-shelf solution—one of which is a potential safety hazard.

The first was that the battery was not aligned correctly. It's VHB taped to the bottom housing and there are sharp protrusions indicating where the battery should be aligned. My battery was placed on one of the protrusions and forced down in a way that could have risked a puncture to the Li-ion battery—this is a serious safety concern, though my battery does not appear to be significantly punctured. I will be looking for a replacement, however, and disposing of this one to prevent risk.

The second was that my numpad enter hot-swap socket was missing. I had assumed I'd popped it off the solder pads when inserting a switch, but I could not find the socket in the housing when I dismantled the keyboard and I did not have to realign the pins to fit them into the replacement socket I had to solder on. Once I soldered on a new one, it functioned just fine.

Edit: Updating to note that the damage to the battery was significant enough that the battery was off-gassing. It's not clear to me if it was off-gassing at the time of arrival, or if I caused a leak attempting to unstick and realign the battery. The keyboard works over cable with the battery removed, which I prefer cabled connection anyway, so this is not a major issue for me.

Update: Keychron has responded to my support request. They have notified me that they will follow up with their quality inspection team and provided satisfactory resolution to my personal needs regarding my order. Given the safety concern of the damaged battery, I don't feel comfortable bumping my review above the original 3 stars, but I'm optimistic this issue is being taken seriously.

As much as I'd love to give this keyboard a high review for it's sound and feel, the problems I've had with this keyboard are unacceptable.

I purchased this keyboard fully assembled. On arrival, the keys sounded great, and the keyboard feels good. After a few weeks of use, some keys stopped inputting correctly. When pressed, they would be delayed or even fail to press at all. This was extremely noticeable in games. When contacted support regarding this issue, they informed me the fix was "Disabling the backlight will help with the latency issue." Considering I was using the keyboard exclusively while plugged in to reduce any potential latency, this is not an acceptable solution. After several more weeks, I started having another issue, where I was regularly getting double key presses while typing. I was able to consistently recreate this issue and it wasn't specific to a singular or a set of keys. When contacting them regarding this issue, they sent 5 spare key switches to fix the issue. Needless to say, this didn't fix the issue, because it wasn't specific to a singular set of keys.

Overall, this product has failed to be what it needed to be: a functioning keyboard.

I've swapped back to my old keyboard, because I'd rather have a keyboard that works 100% of the time, rather than a keyboard that only works 95% of the time. I will not recommend this product or this brand to anybody, and while their support team meant well and responded rather quickly, it was a hassle to have to contact them multiple times within having the keyboard for less than 3 months.

I have been trying to return get my money back on this dumb thing for months. It has lots of pretty flashing lights but doesn’t have the one light you really need…the caps lock light. So, when you are trying to type in a password that has an upper case letter or, worse, a few of them, you don’t know what you are actually typing. When the password you are trying to enter gets rejected you don’t know whether/when you typed an upper or lower case letter. So much for Wirecutter’s testing. I also don’t like this keyboard because the keys feel totally dead. And I really don’t like this manufacturer because they just respond with, “Yup, no caps lock light” and that’s it. I won’t buy anything on Wirecutter’s recommendation again.

Wow I heard good things about this keyboard and I figured for the price it would be alright. I wanted to get into keyboards and this as an intro might make that a short trip! The feel of the keycaps and the red switches are amazing! The keyboard software isn't bad, a little buggy but works. It sounds great but I bit too loud for my taste. I put O rings on the caps and it feels and sounds perfect for me! I my get silent switches and an aluminum or brass board to swap but I couldn't be happier with this keyboard! If you're wanting a mechanical keyboard but don't know where to start, START RIGHT HERE!!!
